What’s NEW at Toronto Health Centre!

(updated April 2010)

TORONTO HEALTH CENTRE NEWS LETTER 2010:

Tendonitis: An inflammation of a tendon of the musculotendinous attachment. Tenosynovitis is when there is inflammation of the tendon in the sheath. Tendonitis can occur through overuse, excessive friction, trauma and infection. Symptoms include localized pain on active and resisted movements, tender on palpation, crepitus (squeaking lump), swelling and thickening of the tendon. An example of this is repetitive stress injuries that are virtually epidemic due to the excessive use of computers at work and home.

Ankle Sprains: Ankle sprains are the nemesis of many in active sport participants. Sprains are immediately painful and incapacitating – the injury can often develop into chronic problems. If treated quickly and promptly, the ankle should heal well and allow a safe and early return to activity. Ankle sprains are a result of the ankle turning in and usually are graded into 3 degrees of severity. The severity of the injury will dictate how long it will take before returning to full activity levels. It is important to treat ankle injuries as early as possible to avoid long term instability and arthritis.

Vitamins: Supplementation of folic acid during the early stages of pregnancy is very important to decrease the chances of birth defects. Folic acid can be found in deep green leafy vegetables, broccoli, asparagus, lima beans, Irish potatoes, spinach, lettuce, brewer’s yeast, wheat germ, mushrooms, nuts, peanuts and liver.

SIGVARIS COMPRESSION SOCKS

A fairly new feature for the clinic is the distribution of Sigvaris socks. If you have swollen, tired feet and ankles, Dr. Bekeschus can fit socks and/or stockings to help relieve tension and reduce swelling. They also are extremely attractive in sheer, ribbed, or cotton styles. Watch out for new styles from SIGVARIS including the new Ever Sheer stockings!

REGISTERED MASSAGE THERAPISTS

We are pleased to welcome our new registered massage therapists, Keisha Davis-MacKay and are also celebrating our first year with massage therapist Lyndsey Wilson. Our RMTs have experience with repetitive strain injuries, sports injuries, lymphedema, and chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, pregnancy massage, general relaxation, hot stone massage and reflexology.

GIFT CERTIFICATES

As the new season approaches, what better way to show your friends, family or colleagues, how much you care for their well-being as to give gift certificates for massage, physiotherapy, or chiropractic assessments. Gift certificates for all our services as well as hot packs and vitamins are available for purchase in our clinic
